Number 1 xmas Toy!

While watching the top xmas toys countdown on TV over the weekend I was only delighted to see my favourite childhood Toy come in at number 1 as the top 100 xmas presents of all time as voted by their viewers. Hurrah for Lego. Here's the company's logo over the years :)

The present day logo looks quite different to 1936 eh ;)

Social networks the new government?

In Digital Media and Society today I was suprised to see the statistics for Obama's online campaign. One of them being that an exit poll stated that Obama had the vote of 70% of the under 25 year olds in the United States. Was this solely due to Obama's clever participation of facebook, twitter, flickr, linked In etc? What do you guys think, would Obama have won without the help of the internet? Personally I think it was a huge benefit to him as he spent a tremendous amount of time maintaining and updating all his OSNs which can not be said for McCain.

I couldnt believe this was a real robot when I saw it, at first I thought maybe it was someone dressed as one, but no! Maybe our lecturers might be robots in a few years!! ^_^

Ah, Memories!

Yesterdays internet authoring class brought me back to the good ol days! searching on altavista and chatting on ICQ! I too had one of those cringeworthy homepages Ruairi was talking about!not as bad as Homer Simpson mind you! ^_^ It was an account I had with angelfire.com(same idea as geocities) an account i thought had long since deceased as it always showed up as a broken link anytime I checked if it was still there. Alas! During the week I found a search engine that retrieves old websites, I put my old link in and low and behold there I was sitting infront of a webpage I created over 10 years ago, Madness! :) If you look at how websites have developed over the past few years it's astounding! e.g. daft.ie - there page in 1999 or apple's page in 1997

Try it out for yourselves!

Freeware V Shareware - Taco

I know there's not many mac users in the class but if anyone knows any good alternatives to Taco HTML editor please let me know! I tried a few others like smultron but they're not as nice to work with! My trial period is just out for Taco so need new one! When i went searching I noticed that Taco used to be freeware and now is shareware, someone on a board commented that it was like a drug dealer getting you hooked, then you have to pay loads of money! How very true! And how very scary that these free products we use day in day out can so easily become fee paying products. the only profile i've paid for online is my flickr page. Everyday though I use my gmail which I use to hold massive amounts of photos and songs etc. without really thinking that they could charge me for this..hhmmmm..... i shall be backing up more often!

FedEx Logo

In my Research Methods Assignment I chose how typography effects the success of advertising. An interesting logo I came across while researching was the FedEx one. Here's what logo blog have to say about it : "Behind the FedEx logo’s simplicity, lays an arrow located in the negative space between the ‘E’ and ‘X’ pointing rightwards. While the arrow in the FedEx logo becomes quite obvious when pointed out, it sure is neglected by many. This arrow in the FedEx logo has been used as a form of subliminal advertising of the brand, symbolizing forward movement and thinking."

The FedEx logo has won many distinctive awards and is often regarded as the best creative design ever.

Blindness

I was looking at the omniplex website and came across this film that's coming out i a few weeks. It was the poster that caught my eye! I think it's really clever how they've taken the idea of blindness and encoprated an eye chart into the movie logo. It's simple, yet very effective.

graphic design portfolio

I've been thinking about the layout of my site for internet authoring and have researched various layouts etc. I came across one guys portfolio which i really like. All the page is simple black and white, and I think the main welcoming image is really soft and subtle.

It would be nicer is he had tabs to navigate instead of scrolling all the way down but i like the simple typeface he's chosen and choice of colours for the site.

He's made websites for big names like Sony and Woman's Health.

He has lovely poster designs too.

Adgoodness!

Came across this pretty cool site.

frederiksamuel

Lots of great images and links on it.
I really like these lego images, very clever design! ah lego! brings me bring back to my youth! :P

something else i found on the site was comparison of hp's old logo and new logo.

This is one guy's opinion on it :

"HP has decided to join the glossy button bandwagon, and now the logo almost looks like a SUPERHERO!! (I don’t mean that in a good way though) They have decided to move away from the rounded rectangle and go with a circle. The HP now has a “fancy” bevel to it as well. For some reason i also see the word NO in the new logo now. Overall I don’t think this is an improvement from their previous well recognized logo."

What are your thoughts?

I myself prefer the original logo. I agree the "superhero" bevel effect is overdone on alot of logos!

New Apple Macbooks

Apple have launched there new series of laptops boasting
all new special features, i.e. upgraded NVIDIA GeForce graphic cards on their 13 inch macbooks to 9400 M GTand 15 inch macbook pro. However on the 17-inch Macbook pro model they've kept the original 8600M GT card. They've designed the 15 inch macbook pro to look the same as the 13th inch macbook. Why? The 17 inch macbook pro is the only model to maintain it's original look. Although Apple have some nice new features such as the multi-track touchpad which has no button because it acts as a button itself. I still don't like the look of the new machines. The sleek look of the pure aluminum was much nicer to my eyes!

It makes me think do computers/ mp3 players change their designs all too soon
to keep up with "fashion"?

Here's the old 15inch model :

Here's the new one:
